Portraying the role of Princess Leia in the Star Wars film series, Carrie Fisher has become one of the most legendary pop culture icons. The actress, who starred alongside Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford in the film series, captivated the audience with her charm and her on-screen chemistry with Han Solo. However, things behind the scenes were far more complex.

In her memoir The Princess Diarist, the actress revealed her whirlwind affair with Ford while filming the 1977 film A New Hope. She revealed that they had a brief fling for three months, however, she always felt that her love for her co-star was unreciprocated, while wondering if Ford ever truly understood the depth of her feelings for him.
Carrie Fisher Had a Brief Affair While Filming Star Wars: Episode I
Carrie Fisher opened up about her brief relationship with her Star Wars co-star Harrison Ford in her memoir, The Princess Diarist. The actress candidly addressed the age difference as she was 19 and Ford was 33, married, and had two children.
However, after the affair began, Fisher was surprised by Ford’s romantic interest in her, given her insecurity and limited romantic experience at the time. “I was shocked by the fact that he fancied me. I was a very insecure girl and had only had one boyfriend,” she recalled.

She described their affair as intense and admitted to being deeply fascinated with the Indiana Jones star, and even hoped that he would leave his wife at the time Mary Marquardt for her. However, while he was her top priority at the time, she felt that Ford did not reciprocate the same sentiments for her.
“I’m sure on our relative lists of priorities, I might have ranked as high as number 15 on his agenda, while Harrison was my number one,” she shared. And it has left her with the recurring question of whether Ford even understood the depth of her feelings for him.
“I don’t think, until now, he knew the intensity of my feelings,” she said, as per The Guardian, while admitting that she had tried to bury those feelings over the years, considering the love unreciprocated, therefore, a kind of failure.

“Even in the diary I don’t like to admit it, because it’s a failure,” she said before adding, “No, it’s not a failure – it’s unreciprocated love — Which I guess is a type of failure.” During her conversation with The Guardian, the actress also recalled how things were between them post-affair and Star Wars and prior to when she decided to share the details in her book.
Carrie Fisher Reflected on Her Reunion With Harrison Ford Post-Affair
Their romance that began while filming A New Hope ran its course by the time the film wrapped. While Fisher remembers their time together fondly, the actress has shared that Harrison Ford had never been one to discuss their brief relationship.

While speaking to The Guardian, Fisher shared, “He’s not a big talker,” noting their ease when they later reunited for The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. “I think it was reabsorbed,” she revealed.
Even during their 2015 reunion for The Force Awakens, they did not discuss their affair. Fisher recounted an incident while filming Episode VII after she noticed a romance similar to theirs on the set and mentioned it to Ford,
“I pointed it out to him, and he said, ‘Well, I hope it goes well for them,'” Fisher recalled her conversation, saying that it was the only time, Ford referred to their relationship.

Despite the lack of closure, Fisher admitted she still had feelings for Ford, conceding she’d feel embarrassed if they were to meet again. When she began working on her memoir, she reached out to Ford to inform him about the book and offered to remove anything he felt uncomfortable with.
However, he did not respond. Though their relationship never became official, Ford later divorced his first wife, Mary Marquardt, in 1979 and married Melissa Mathison in 1983. Ford is now married to actress Calista Flockhart.
Fisher’s personal life also evolved post-affair, including a brief marriage to Paul Simon in 1983. Throughout her later years, she found comfort in her beloved French Bulldog, Gary. Fisher passed away at the age of 60 in 2016 from cardiac arrest.
