Fans’ frustration only takes a height seeing how excited the actor was upon seeing himself wielding a lightsaber in the 2015 film. Among the Star Wars cast members, who shared their reaction to The Force Awakens trailer, Boyega’s thrill at seeing himself in the space opera with a lightsaber led fans to believe he should have had a more significant journey in the franchise.

John Boyega’s Reaction Reignites Conversation About His Character’s Treatment in Star Wars

Star Wars has introduced various characters over the years. One such character, who has constantly been a subject of polarizing reviews, is John Boyega’s Finn. Introduced in The Force Awakens, the character was initially touted as a promising protagonist for the sequel trilogy.

And fans have been disappointed by the direction his character took, feeling it did not live up to expectations. Nearly a decade after his Star Wars debut, reflections on Boyega’s character and his enthusiastic reaction to wielding a lightsaber have reignited discussions among fans.

In the brief clip from his reaction to The Force Awakens trailer, Boyega transitions from a calm nod to excitedly leaping over a couch in full excitement, expressing his enthusiasm for his journey in the space opera.

Reacting to Boyega’s clip, fans expressed their disappointment over how his character was treated and developed throughout the sequel trilogy. “This is so sad in retrospect,” one fan said, as others lamented the mishandling of Finn’s potential.

“Disney failed him,” another fan added. Other fans also echoed sentiments that Finn could have been positioned as a pivotal figure, possibly as a Jedi, but his character development stagnated after Episode VII.

Complaints Regarding John Boyega’s Character in Star Wars

Introduced alongside Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver in the sequel trilogy, John Boyega’s character serves as one of the leading figures in the trilogy. However, when it comes to the main protagonist, it has always been Rey, portrayed by Ridley in the franchise.

There have been numerous discussions about the missed opportunity of having Finn as the central protagonist, offering a fresh narrative and perspective, with a nameless stormtrooper following his fate and destiny to embrace the Force within him.

Fans argued that developing Finn into a Jedi would have provided a richer storyline than focusing solely on Rey as The Last Jedi. Criticism mounted over the sequel trilogy’s handling of Finn’s character across The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, which many felt diminished his potential.

Both fans and Boyega himself expressed disappointment with how his character was sidelined. “They gave all the nuance to Adam Driver, all the nuance to Daisy Ridley,” he told GQ in an interview, highlighting how his character was sidelined and it will continue to be a topic of discussion among fans.

The Star Wars sequel trilogy is available to stream on Disney+.
