Since James Cameron’s iconic 1984 sci-fi action film, Terminator has been a Hollywood staple, with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton at its core. However, despite its popularity, the franchise has often puzzled fans with its intricate time-travel elements and their consequences.

Enter Terminator Zero, the latest addition to the franchise, that dares to explore the things that even Cameron couldn’t. By tackling the intricacies of time travel and introducing a branched timeline arc, the Netflix anime series successfully addressed the unanswered mysteries that have puzzled fans for decades.

Terminator Zero Finally Delivers Answers to the Biggest Mysteries in the Sci-fi Franchise

The original Terminator film has long faced criticism for its paradoxical nature, primarily due to its closed time loop. The story involves Kyle Reese traveling back to protect Sarah Connor and ultimately fathering John Connor, who later leads the resistance against Skynet.

This loop contradicts the origins of key events and characters, resulting in temporal paradoxes and causal loops that lead to confusing or contradictory outcomes. Additionally, inconsistencies in continuity and unclear time travel mechanics have also contributed to the confusion.

However, instead of adhering to the looped timelines and paradoxes, that have defined the series so far, the anime introduces a fresh narrative approach by fundamentally redefining the rules of time travel within the franchise.

The Netflix series establishes that traveling back to the past creates an entirely new timeline. When Skynet sends a cyborg assassin back in time, it results in the creation of a separate timeline rather than altering the existing one.

The critical shift unchains the franchise from its past narratives, allowing the creators of the show to explore the story without any constraints related to its predecessors.

Terminator Zero Creator Opened Up About His Plans For its Future

With the show receiving positive reviews and debuting with a 100% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, the creator of Terminator Zero, Mattson Tomlin, has shared his plans for the future of the show.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Tomlin shared that he has plans for several more seasons of the anime if it gets renewed.

He told the outlet,

It will be a story that follows these three kids as they grow up through this war that eventually evolves into the future war, and how their various relationships to humans and machines are evolving and radically different from each other.

While the series’s future remains uncertain so far, it has earned mostly positive reviews. The anime has also been commended for its successful fusion of familiar elements with innovative storytelling as the new installment in the sci-fi franchise.

The Terminator is available to rent or buy on Amazon Prime Video.

Terminator Zero is available to watch on Netflix.
