Originally brought to life by Matt Damon, Jason Bourne became an icon of high-octane thrills and gripping espionage. However, after a trilogy that cemented Bourne’s status, Damon took a brief hiatus from the role, paving the way for Jeremy Renner to step into the fray with The Bourne Legacy.

While Damon eventually reprised his role in a fifth installment, Renner has revealed that there were also plans for a crossover between his character, Aaron Cross, and Jason Bourne. While their on-screen collaboration had the potential to revolutionize the series and dominate the box office, these plans never materialized.

Renner shared that the initial plan was to have the two characters face off against each other. But soon they realized that combining their strengths would be more compelling.

They were making significant progress with both Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass, who directed the second and third installments of the franchise, both were also interested in exploring the idea. He shared,

We wanted to pivot and try to get both parallel universes together. That was my idea, was to try to get us together. Pin us against each other and then we realize, ‘What are we doing? You and I together can go smash all of them.

“Then, you got Bourne and Cross together,” Renner further recounted before adding, “That’s a good duo. That would’ve been pretty badass.” However, things did not progress as Renner anticipated and the crossover plans were dropped.

When asked about a potential crossover with Renner, Damon expressed skepticism, saying that he doesn’t see how the story would work. The actor argued that Bourne’s character has always wanted to escape his life, so he’s unsure how to reignite his motivation to continue the story.

A Jason Bourne and Aaron Cross Team Up Could Dominate the Box Office

Jeremy Renner’s pitch for a Cross and Bourne team-up envisioned the two assassins initially being pitted against each other. However, upon their encounter, they would discover a shared enemy—the government agencies that manipulated and used them as expendable pawns.

With both the highly skilled operatives joining forces to take down the very organizations that trained and betrayed them, the film could have become the most thrilling and action-packed entry in the Bourne franchise.

The idea of Matt Damon and Jeremy Renner’s characters forming a compelling partnership would have been an intriguing concept, especially given their talent and on-screen prowess.

With a sixth installment currently in development, the possibility of this crossover remains on the table, especially considering that Damon and director Paul Greengrass previously expressed interest in the idea.

While nothing is confirmed, the combined star power of Damon and Renner, coupled with the exciting premise of their characters teaming up, would have made this a highly anticipated and box-office-dominating event.

The Bourne Legacy is available to watch on Prime Video.
