One of the most celebrated actresses in Hollywood, Charlize Theron often finds herself at the center of relationship rumors. While the actress is reportedly dating Alex Dimitrijevic, there were once whispers of a past connection with Marvel star Jeremy Renner.
The two were reportedly spotted together on several occasions leading up to the 2010 Oscars Vanity Fair party, sparking speculation about a secret affair, with sources commending their undeniable chemistry.
Charlize Theron and Jeremy Renner Sparked Secret Romance Rumors
At the 82nd Academy Awards in 2010 Jeremy Renner won the Best Actor Oscar for his performance in The Hurt Locker. The film, which earned nine nominations at the ceremony, won six Oscars, including for Best Picture and Best Director.
However, ahead of the awards ceremony, the actor made headlines for his rumored romance with Charlize Theron. As per Daily Mail, the Hawkeye star was reportedly spotted with the Mad Max star Charlize Theron occasionally before the Oscars.
“They get along very well and we suspect something is going on between them, although they are being very coy,” a source close to Theron told the outlet. Theron, who had split with his ex-fiancee Stuart Townsend in late 2009, reportedly wanted to keep “things below the radar as Charlize doesn’t want to upset Stuart.”
Sources also stated that although they have been together and have been spending a lot of time together, Theron was not seeking anything serious as she was “lined up to do Mad Max 4 soon in Australia.”
The Marvel star later clarified their relationship. “We’re just friends. We’re crazy about each other. I can go hang out with her and play her piano and sip Scotch,” Renner told People in an interview, as per Digital Spy.
Theron and Renner had previously shared the screen in the 2005 drama film North Country, which earned the actress a Best Actress Oscar nomination. The duo could have been seen together again in George Miller’s Mad Max, as Renner was in the run for the titular role before Tom Hardy landed the part.
Jeremy Renner Almost Starred Alongside Charlize Theron in Mad Max: Fury Road
In an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Jeremy Renner revealed that he was almost cast alongside Charlize Theron in the 2015 post-apocalyptic action film Mad Max: Fury Road.
Directed by George Miller, the film served as the fourth installment in the Mad Max franchise and starred Charlize Theron alongside Tom Hardy.
Renner described his audition for the movie as the “weirdest thing,” as he revealed that it was also one of the last auditions he did. He shared,
It was a whole different experience. You had to have someone watch you go through the comic and read the script, and then you leave it behind, you have to sign your life away, and this whole thing, security guards, it’s like, ‘what?’ It’s the weirdest thing.
He also recalled doing a screen test with Zoe Kravitz and was also supposed to have more screen tests with more actresses as well. “And then there was Hardy and one other [actor],” he further shared.
The third actor, as revealed in Blood, Sweat & Chrome: The Wild and True Story of Mad Max: Fury Road was Armie Hammer. Both Renner and Hammer ultimately lost the role to Tom Hardy, who later received widespread acclaim for his performance.
