Jim Parsons, known for portraying the role of Sheldon Cooper in the hit sitcom The Big Bang Theory, once opened up about an audition that didn’t go his way. Before he gained recognition for his portrayal of Sheldon Cooper, the actor had attempted for a role in other well-known and popular sitcoms like The Office.

Parsons later reflected on his audition for a role in The Office, which he ultimately lost. However, despite the initial disappointment, the actor has no regrets over losing the role, as he shared that he wasn’t the best fit for the character.
Jim Parsons Recalled His Failed Auditioned For The Office
In an appearance on Dan Patrick Show, the Emmy-winning actor Jim Parsons shared that before starring on The Big Bang Theory, he had auditioned for a role on The Office. However, he doesn’t exactly remember which character he auditioned for.

“I don’t remember, it was either Jim or Dwight,” he said before adding, “Which tells you exactly why I wasn’t right for it.” He further explained that though he didn’t get the part, it was pretty clear that John Krasinski and Rainn Wilson, were better suited for their respective roles.
There wasn’t a role that I was a ringer for… I knew Rainn Wilson and I knew John Krasinski and I think that’s why I can’t remember who it was because I knew whatever part it was, somebody I sort of vaguely knew got it.
During the interview, the actor also shared how he initially doubted his stability for the part and thought that the concept of adapting a British show for American TV wouldn’t work.
I thought what a dumb idea for a show… If we wanted a show about an office in America, we would have done it already. We don’t need BBC copy or whatever.

However, Parsons admitted that he underestimated the concept. He also recognized that if he had landed the role in The Office, he likely would not have been cast as Sheldon in The Big Bang Theory, emphasizing his belief that everything happens for a reason.
Jim Parsons Was Confident About His Big Bang Theory Audition
During his conversation with Dan Patrick, Jim Parsons shared that his intuition about roles and projects isn’t always accurate, as he underestimated The Office initially, which ended up being a huge hit.

However, when it came to The Big Bang Theory, he was quite confident that he would at least be a serious contender for the role of Sheldon Cooper. “I didn’t know what they would think, but I knew that I felt I would be in the final mix,” he said.
“With The Office, this just shows how stupid I am about Hollywood,” he further stated talking about his initial intuition about The Office before adding, “I was wrong and I have no foresight with things like that.”
Parsons eventually landed the role of Sheldon Cooper in The Big Bang Theory, which not only brought him worldwide fame but also earned him four Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe Award for his performance.

Beyond television, Parsons has also showcased his talent in films such as Hidden Figures, The Boys in the Band, The Normal Heart, and Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile, receiving critical acclaim for his performances in each.
The Big Bang Theory is available to watch on Max.
