During his recent appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience, Taylor Sheridan shared his thoughts about Tom Hanks’ Oscar-winning film Forrest Gump. The showrunner shared his criticism regarding the implausible premise and unrealistic portrayal of the film’s protagonist, describing the movie as overly simplistic and didactic.

However, the revelation comes as a surprise considering Hanks made a cameo appearance in the spin-off of his hit western drama, 1883. Singer-actor, Tim McGraw shared the details of how the miniseries managed to secure a cameo from the Oscar-winning actor, despite Sheridan’s conflicting opinions on his iconic movie.
Tom Hanks’ Surprising Cameo in the Yellowstone Spin-off
The success of the Western drama Yellowstone has been followed by several spin-offs. Starring Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, the 2021 miniseries 1883 serves as the first spin-off, which follows the post-Civil War era of the Dutton family’s journey to establish the Yellowstone Ranch in Montana.

The second episode of the show, ‘Behind Us, a Cliff’, featured a cameo appearance from the 67-year-old actor Tom Hanks, as General Meade, who offers solace to James Dutton following the loss of fellow soldiers.
In a conversation with Entertainment Tonight, the 1883 stars Tim McGraw and Faith Hill shared insight into the Cast Away star’s cameo appearance in the show. The couple shared that they have been very good friends with Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson for years.

McGraw recalled reaching out to Hanks to ask about a brief appearance in his show. “Tom and Rita [Wilson] and Faith and I have been friends for a long time,” he shared before adding, “So I gave Tom a call and just asked. He goes, ‘Tell me when to be there.'”
McGrew appreciated the Forrest Gump star’s efforts and praised him for delivering an outstanding performance in the Western drama. Along with Hanks, his wife Rita Wilson, also made a brief cameo in the role of a storekeeper named Carolyn in the miniseries.
Taylor Sheridan Explained Why 1883 Will Not Get a Season 2
Despite receiving positive reviews, Taylor Sheridan’s 1883 concluded after its first season, as the showrunner has opted not to renew it. Explaining the decision not to continue the series, Sheridan said that he had already told the story he envisioned.

Sheridan has shared that they wanted to make a 10-hour movie, which they achieved through the 10-episode series format, and have no plans to extend it further. He shared in a conversation with Deadline,
“For me, as a storyteller it feels close ended. I’m going to peek through the window of a different era and see what I see then — We wanted to make a ten-hour movie that ended, and that’s what we did.”
Fans of the Yellowstone universe, however, can anticipate more stories from the franchise, as a number of prequel and sequel spin-offs are in development, including 6666, 1944, and 2024. Additionally, the Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren-led 1923 has also been renewed for a second season.
Yellowstone and 1883 are available to stream on Prime Video.
