DC head and the director of the upcoming film Superman James Gunn has firmly dismissed the possibility of including several songs in the new movie, notably David Bowie’s Starman, which fans have been eagerly looking forward to. The song has been featured in multiple movies and shows over the years along with many viral Superman fan edits. Fans even wanted Gunn to use the song for the Guardians of the Galaxy movies.

However, he has denied that he would not use the song in the upcoming film. While fans continue to express their wish for the song to be featured in the David Corenswet-starring superhero film, Gunn has remained steadfast in his decision.
James Gunn Remains Firm on Not Using David Bowie’s Starman in Superman
James Gunn is known for his candidness when it comes to interacting with fans on social media and sharing updates about his projects. A fan recently asked the filmmaker if he is planning to feature David Bowie’s Starman in the upcoming film.
“One of the reasons I wouldn’t use it (after being asked hundreds of times to use it for the past ten years in Guardians,” he said, as per ComicBook.com, while responding to fans pointing out the popularity of the song in the fan-made edits.
Additionally, he has also named several other popular songs, that he is being refrained from using in the upcoming film. These songs include Kryptonite by 3 Doors Down, Superman by Eminem, Sunshine Superman by Donovan, Superman by Taylor Swift, and Superman by Goldfinger.

While the filmmaker remains firm in his decision, fans have expressed disappointment with the news, who have been eagerly anticipating the song to be featured in the movie. “He said this a while ago, but I’m sad he didn’t change his mind,” one X (Twitter) user said.
Some speculated that the song could potentially be featured in the trailer of the movie, while others shared that they would be able to see David Corenswet’s Superman with Starman, as fans would certainly make several edits with it.
James Gunn Shared Update For Superman Production
James Gunn has recently shared a new update on the ongoing filming of Superman starring David Corenswet. After the filmmaker shared a funny meme about hair products featuring his picture on Instagram, fans started asking when they would get a trailer for the highly anticipated DCU film.

While he did not say anything clearly about the trailer release, Gunn did mention, “We’re only a little over halfway thru shooting,” while replying to the fan query. The filming of the first DCU movie, which is scheduled to release in 2025, is expected to wrap by summer, as shared by Corenswet’s stunt performer, Justin Howell in an earlier interview.
As for the trailer of the film, there is no specific schedule as to when fans might get the first footage of the new DCU film and Gunn’s vision for the DC superhero. Superman will be the first film in Gunn’s DC reboot, featuring David Corenswet in the lead role alongside Rachel Brosnahan and Nicholas Hoult.
Superman is scheduled to be released on July 11, 2025.
